Pet Food Recall Analysis

A pet food recall or withdraw is typically issued when the product does not meet the guarantees of the manufacturer or regulations set by the FDA. Essentially, a recall or withdraw is like a broken promise to pets and consumers. So then we ask ourselves, why do so many brands have repetitive recalls? They tout “premium ingredients”, “clean facilities”, and “100+ tests during production.”

The companies or trade names with the most pet food recalls include Nutro / Natural Choice, Iams, Hill Country Fare, Sophistocat, Ol’Roy, Eukanuba Pet Price, Diamond, ALPO, Natural Balance and a few others. The brands have been consistently recalled which shows that they are not fixing the source of the problem. Why would you feed a brand that is consistently recalled?

The year of 2013 did not have many pet food recalls but that should not overshadow the problems that have occurred in the pet food industry this year. The FDA has been investigating Jerky Pet Treats due to hundreds of deaths and thousands of reported illnesses but has yet to issue any recalls.

Pet Food Recalls & Withdraws By Cause

RecallCauses

Salmonella was the number one cause of recalls in 2013 with 18 recalls or withdraws issued by the FDA. Salmonella is likely one of the most dangerous causes for recalls as it can cause illness and death in pets but can have similar effects on humans who typically handle pet food when feeding.  Salmonella can be found in raw meats and poultry products and contamination of pet food can be caused by cross contamination of cooked and uncooked products.

Vitamin/Mineral levels were the second most frequent cause of recalls. Most of these were where the vitamin levels did not meet the guaranteed analysis. While this is typically not as toxic as other causes of recalls, it can mean that your pet is not receiving the vitamins or minerals it needs. In one instance, there was a recall due to higher levels of calcium that may be unsafe for pets.

Antibiotic residue was the third most frequent cause of recalls. This is likely caused by the use of antibiotics in feed for poultry. The FDA has prohibited specific antibiotics from being included in pet foods.

There was one instance of Aflatoxin which is related to mold. Foods that have been recalled due to this are typically high in grains like wheat, corn, or soy.

Pet Food Brands with NO Recalls

In my search for brands without any recalls, I only recommend one company. The dog and cat food company was started in 1998 and touts a product that is made in the USA without any of the fillers, often wheat, corn, or soy based, which are common causes of recalls. It is made in the USA and delivered fresh, generally within 4 to 6 weeks of being made.
